Ghost of Spring by Taylor Barnes
Taylor Barnes (b. 1955 Los Angeles, Ca – )
Working in a genre described as 'magical realism,' Taylor is known for works that are semi-realistic while intriguing in their symbolic and spiritual elements. She grew up surfing in Southern California and her art is rooted in the natural surroundings, as well as the various cultures, that intersect in Los Angeles. The current works are based upon her recent relocation to the Montagne Noire in southern France. The forests and history of the area have inspired work that integrates subconscious symbolism with visual clues that are evocative and catalytic.
Taylor combines images in a series of ideas which may include painting, digital, or written elements, to explore many vantage points of a concept. At the core of the work is paint handling, mark making, and her training as a visual artist.
BFA in painting from University of California, Santa Barbara.
- 1986 established her studio in Venice Beach working as a painter/illustrator, graphic designer, writer, and publisher.
- 1987, after a successful career as a magazine art director, Taylor founded L'Image Graphics, an award-winning art publishing company, in Los Angeles.
- 2013, Taylor became the founder and Editor-in-Chief of 3.1 Venice Magazine, covering art and culture in Venice Beach, California.
- 2021, Taylor relocated to Saissac, France to launch a studio/artist residency program, 3.1 Art. This residence program will mentor creatives and foster community for artists, writers and musicians.
Taylor has said with regard to this new venture, “The observation of nature, coupled with the study of history, create the intersections which inspire my work. Saissac, a medieval village in the Montagne Noire, provides me with the perfect inspiration. Hopefully it will do the same for others.”
